3 pocket diaries kept by William S. Tilton of Boston, an officer and, from Spring of 1864, commander of the Mass. 22nd Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the Civil War. The diaries, kept from 27 Jun. 1862 - 10 Oct. 1864 (with gaps), begin with a description of the battle at Gaine's Mill where Tilton was wounded and taken prisoner to Libby Prison until July 19th. The remainder describes routine duties, pickets, markets, and camps in Virginia and action seen at the following engagements: Antietam (Sep. 1862); Blackford Ford (Sep. 1862); Fredericksburg (Dec. 1862); Gettysburg (July 1863); Wilderness (May 1864); Spotsylvania (May 1864); Cold Harbor (Jun. 1864); and Petersburg (Jun. 1864).
